Bromine
Bromine is a highly reactive halogen widely used in water treatment, flame retardants, and chemical synthesis. It offers strong biocidal and oxidizing properties. With consistent purity and controlled handling, bromine ensures effective microbial control and reliable performance across industrial, pharmaceutical, and specialty chemical applications.
Description
Bromine Supplier — Industrial & Pharma Grade Liquid Bromine for Water Treatment, Agrochemicals & Flame Retardants
Bromine (Br2, CAS 7726-95-6) is one of the most versatile halogen elements in the chemical industry, occupying a critical position between chlorine and iodine in the periodic table and offering a unique combination of reactivity, density, and industrial applicability. This dark reddish-brown, non-metallic liquid at room temperature is the only non-metallic element that exists in liquid form under standard conditions — a distinctive physical property that underscores its industrial significance. Commercial bromine is produced almost exclusively from underground brine sources through a chlorination-steam stripping process, with major production concentrated in the United States, Israel, China, and Jordan. India’s demand for bromine and its derivatives has grown substantially over the past decade, driven by expanding water treatment infrastructure, pharmaceutical API synthesis, agrochemical formulation, and flame retardant manufacturing. For procurement managers and plant heads responsible for sourcing bromine, understanding purity grades, packaging requirements, transportation regulations, and derivative chemistry is essential to ensuring safe, cost-effective, and regulatory-compliant supply chain management. Davar ChemTech supplies industrial-grade and pharmaceutical-grade liquid bromine from its Vadodara distribution hub, accompanied by full Certificate of Analysis, MSDS documentation, and hazardous goods transport compliance.

Industrial Applications
| Industry | Reason for Use |
| Water Treatment | Bromine-based biocides (BCDMH, DBDMH) are preferred over chlorine in hot tubs, cooling towers, and industrial water systems due to superior stability at high pH and elevated temperatures |
| Agrochemical Manufacturing | Bromine is a key raw material for synthesizing methyl bromide (fumigant), brominated herbicides, and insecticides — organobromine chemistry provides targeted pest control activity |
| Flame Retardants | Brominated flame retardants (TBBPA, HBCD, decabromodiphenyl ether) are incorporated into plastics, textiles, and electronics to meet stringent fire safety standards (UL 94 V-0) |
| Pharmaceutical Synthesis | Bromine serves as brominating agent and intermediate in the synthesis of APIs including bronchodilators, sedatives, and antihistamines — pharmaceutical-grade bromine minimizes metal-catalyst poisoning |
In the water treatment industry, bromine-based disinfectants have gained significant market share over traditional chlorine-based systems, particularly in applications involving elevated temperatures and alkaline pH conditions. Hypobromous acid (HOBr), the active brominating species formed when bromine reacts with water, is a more powerful biocide than hypochlorous acid (HOCl) at pH values above 7.5, and it retains significantly more of its biocidal efficacy in hot water environments such as spa pools, cooling towers, and industrial process water loops. Bromochlorodimethylhydantoin (BCDMH) and dibromodimethylhydantoin (DBDMH) — solid bromine donors that release HOBr gradually upon contact with water — have become the disinfectant of choice for commercial hot tubs and hospital hot water systems across Europe, North America, and increasingly in India’s hospitality and healthcare infrastructure.
The flame retardant sector represents the single largest consumption channel for bromine globally, accounting for approximately 40% of total bromine demand. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is the dominant brominated flame retardant used in epoxy PCB laminates for electronics manufacturing, while hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is used in expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS) insulation foams for building construction. India’s electronics manufacturing sector, which is experiencing rapid growth under the Make in India initiative, has driven increasing demand for brominated flame retardants and consequently for elemental bromine as the feedstock. In agrochemical manufacturing, bromine’s electrophilic reactivity enables the efficient synthesis of brominated organic compounds that function as herbicides, insecticides, and soil fumigants. Methyl bromide, though increasingly regulated under the Montreal Protocol due to its ozone-depleting properties, remains in limited use for quarantine and pre-shipment fumigation, while newer brominated agrochemicals are being developed as replacements with improved environmental profiles.

Storage, Handling & Safety
Bromine is a highly toxic, corrosive, and strongly oxidizing substance classified under GHS as Acute Toxicity Category 2 (inhalation), Category 3 (oral and dermal), and Skin Corrosion Category 1B. Its vapours are extremely irritating to the respiratory tract, eyes, and mucous membranes — even brief exposure can cause severe coughing, pulmonary edema, and potentially fatal respiratory damage. Bromine liquid causes deep, painful chemical burns on contact with skin and can cause permanent eye damage. Always handle bromine in a well-ventilated fume hood or under local exhaust extraction. Wear acid-resistant chemical suit, neoprene or nitrile rubber gloves, chemical splash goggles, and face shield.
A full-face supplied-air respirator (SAR) or self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is mandatory for operations involving potential bromine vapour exposure. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from organic materials, reducing agents, and combustible substances. CRITICAL: Bromine is NOT compatible with HDPE, PP, PVC, natural rubber, neoprene, mild steel, or stainless steel — it will rapidly degrade these materials. Use ONLY borosilicate glass, PTFE (Teflon), PVDF, PFA, lead-lined steel, Monel metal, or nickel containers. Keep containers tightly sealed — bromine vapour pressure at room temperature (approximately 230 mmHg at 25 °C) means that open containers will rapidly fill a confined space with toxic fumes. In case of a spill, evacuate the area immediately and contact a hazardous materials response team. Neutralize small spills with sodium thiosulfate or sodium bisulfite solution. Never use water directly on a bromine spill as it can increase vapour generation. Transport under Class 8 (Corrosive) and Class 6.1 (Toxic) with full ADR/IMDG documentation.
Supply Capability & Distribution Strength
Davar ChemTech sources bromine from quality-certified manufacturers and distributes it across India from our Vadodara, Gujarat logistics center. Our supply chain is designed to handle the unique challenges of bromine logistics — hazardous chemical licensing, specialized lined containers, and temperature-controlled storage to minimize vapour pressure build-up. We serve water treatment chemical compounders in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka; agrochemical manufacturers in Gujarat’s Ankleshwar and Dahej chemical zones; pharmaceutical API units in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad; and flame retardant compounders supplying India’s electronics and construction industries.
