Ammonium Sulfate
Ammonium Sulfate is a nitrogen and sulfur-based fertilizer widely used to improve soil fertility and crop yield. It enhances protein synthesis and plant growth while reducing soil alkalinity. With consistent quality and solubility, it supports efficient nutrient uptake in a variety of agricultural applications.
Description
Ammonium Sulfate Supplier — Dual-Purpose N+S Fertilizer for Soil Conditioning & Crop Nutrition
Ammonium Sulfate ((NH4)2SO4) occupies a strategically important position in balanced crop nutrition programs as one of the few fertilizer materials that simultaneously addresses both nitrogen and sulphur deficiency — two of the most widespread nutrient constraints in Indian agriculture. With 21% nitrogen in the ammonium form and 24% sulphur as sulfate, ammonium sulfate delivers these essential nutrients in a highly plant-available, acidifying form that is particularly beneficial for alkaline and calcareous soils prevalent across large areas of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Karnataka. The ammonium nitrogen fraction is resistant to leaching (unlike nitrate), providing a sustained nitrogen release pattern that aligns well with the uptake curve of many row crops and plantation crops. Meanwhile, the sulfate sulfur component is immediately available for plant uptake, supporting protein synthesis, enzyme activation, and oil content improvement in oilseed crops. Davar ChemTech supplies agricultural-grade ammonium sulfate meeting FCO specifications, available in crystalline, granular, and compacted forms for diverse application requirements.
Key Technical Features
- 21% N (ammonium form) + 24% S (sulfate form) — addresses two critical nutrient deficiencies in a single application
- Acidifying reaction (pH-lowering effect) particularly valuable for alkaline and calcareous soils across northern and western India
- Ammonium nitrogen is resistant to leaching and denitrification losses, providing efficient nitrogen utilization in irrigated systems
- Sulfate sulfur is immediately plant-available, unlike elemental sulfur which requires microbial oxidation over weeks to months
- Low moisture absorption compared to urea, reducing caking and storage degradation in humid conditions
- Excellent compatibility for blending with other fertilizer materials (DAP, MOP, SOP) in custom NPK mixture production
Industrial Applications
| Industry | Reason for Use |
| Paddy Rice Farming | Preferred nitrogen source for flooded rice — ammonium-N is stable under anaerobic paddy conditions while nitrate-N would be lost through denitrification |
| Oilseed Crops (Mustard, Groundnut) | Sulfur supply enhances oil content percentage and protein quality; ammonium form supports steady vegetative growth without lodging |
| Alkaline Soil Treatment | Acidifying reaction lowers soil pH over time, improving availability of micronutrients (iron, zinc, manganese) that are fixed in alkaline conditions |
| Tea & Coffee Plantations | Sulfur enhances flavour profile and caffeine content in tea; ammonium form provides sustained nitrogen release in plantation soil profiles |
In paddy rice cultivation, ammonium sulfate offers a distinct agronomic advantage over urea. Under flooded anaerobic conditions, nitrate-nitrogen (from urea hydrolysis and subsequent nitrification) is rapidly lost through denitrification — the bacterially mediated conversion of nitrate to nitrogen gas (N2) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Ammonium nitrogen, by contrast, remains stable under anaerobic conditions, persisting in the floodwater and soil for uptake by rice roots over an extended period. This translates to significantly higher nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) for ammonium sulfate in rice compared to urea, with field trials consistently showing 15–25% improvement in N recovery. For oilseed crops, sulphur is arguably the most important secondary nutrient — it directly influences oil content (each 1% increase in seed sulfur can raise oil content by 2–3%), protein quality, and glucosinolate profiles in mustard. Indian soils are increasingly sulphur-deficient due to intensive cropping, use of sulphur-free fertilizers (DAP, urea), and reduced atmospheric sulphur deposition — making ammonium sulfate an increasingly critical input for oilseed farmers. The acidifying nature of ammonium sulfate is particularly valuable on the calcareous soils of Rajasthan and Haryana, where soil pH values of 8.0–9.0 severely limit the availability of iron, zinc, and manganese.

Storage, Handling & Safety
Ammonium sulfate is a relatively low-hazard fertilizer, but standard handling precautions apply. Dust generated during bag opening and spreading can cause irritation to eyes and respiratory tract — wear a dust mask, safety goggles, and gloves during handling. When dissolved in water, the solution is mildly acidic (pH 5.0–5.5) — avoid prolonged skin contact. Store in a dry, well-ventilated area in original sealed bags. Ammonium sulfate is non-flammable and non-combustible under normal storage conditions. Do not mix with strong alkalis (lime, calcium cyanamide) during storage, as this can release ammonia gas. In case of large spills, sweep up carefully to minimize dust generation and collect for reuse. The product has excellent shelf life when stored dry — typically 24+ months without quality degradation.
Supply Capability & Distribution Strength
Davar ChemTech distributes ammonium sulfate across India’s major agricultural states from its Vadodara logistics hub. Our supply network covers the rice-growing regions of Punjab, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, the oilseed belts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, and the tea and coffee plantations of Karnataka, Kerala, and Assam. We stock both crystalline and granular grades to match different application methods — crystalline for direct soil application and soluble-grade granular for fertigation systems. Bulk orders (10 MT+) are served within 5–7 working days; standard bag orders dispatch in 3–5 days for Gujarat and Maharashtra. FCO-compliant documentation and batch Certificate of Analysis are provided with every consignment.
