Thermic Fluids

Thermic Fluids are specialized heat transfer media used in industrial heating systems for efficient and uniform thermal energy transfer. They offer excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and high operating temperature performance. Widely used in chemical, textile, and process industries, thermic fluids ensure energy-efficient operation and reliable heat transfer performance.

Description

Thermic Fluids — Precision Heat Transfer Solutions by Davar ChemTech, Vadodara

Thermic fluids, also known as heat transfer fluids (HTFs), serve as the critical thermal medium in indirect heating and cooling systems across a vast spectrum of industries. Unlike direct-fired heating, thermic fluid-based systems deliver precise, uniform, and contamination-free temperature control — a prerequisite in pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing, and high-purity chemical synthesis. Davar ChemTech, headquartered in Vadodara, Gujarat, is a trusted pan-India supplier of thermic fluids spanning mineral oil-based, synthetic hydrocarbon, silicone-based, and high-temperature specialty grades.

Choosing the correct thermic fluid grade is paramount to operational efficiency and plant safety. An underspecified fluid degrades rapidly at elevated temperatures, forming carbonaceous deposits that choke heat exchangers and increase pumping costs. Conversely, an over-specified fluid inflates procurement budgets without delivering proportional benefits. Davar ChemTech’s technical team assists customers in selecting the optimal grade based on the actual operating temperature window, fluid lifetime expectations, toxicity requirements, and system design parameters. Every batch supplied undergoes stringent quality testing — including flash point, pour point, kinematic viscosity, and thermal stability analysis — ensuring full compliance with IS and ASTM standards.

Key Features & Advantages

  • Wide Operating Temperature Range:
Davar ChemTech’s thermic fluid portfolio covers the full spectrum from sub-zero cryogenic applications (-60 °C) to extreme high-temperature processes reaching 380 °C. This eliminates the need for multiple fluid suppliers and simplifies inventory management for multi-process plants.
  • Extended Thermal Stability:
Formulated using highly refined base stocks and proprietary antioxidant packages, these fluids resist thermal cracking and oxidative degradation even under continuous high-temperature operation. Service life typically ranges from five to ten years, depending on operating conditions and fluid grade.
  • Low Viscosity & High Heat Transfer Efficiency:
Low kinematic viscosity at both startup and operating temperatures minimises pump power consumption and ensures rapid heat-up cycles. High thermal conductivity coefficients enable efficient energy transfer, reducing fuel consumption and lowering the carbon footprint of heated processes.
  • Non-Corrosive & Compatible with Common Materials:
All thermic fluid grades are engineered to be non-corrosive to carbon steel, stainless steel, and copper alloys commonly used in heat exchanger construction. This protects expensive plant equipment and extends the working life of seals, gaskets, and pump components.
  • Pharmaceutical & Food-Grade Options Available:
Select grades — including silicone-based and food-grade mineral oil formulations — meet FDA 21 CFR and NSF H1 registration requirements, making them suitable for indirect-contact applications in pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing, and beverage pasteurisation plants.
  • Pan-India Supply with Technical Support:
Davar ChemTech stocks multiple grades at its Vadodara warehouse for immediate dispatch across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and beyond. On-site fluid analysis, system commissioning support, and fluid replacement advisory services are available to ensure seamless transitions and optimal system performance.
  • Environmentally Responsible Formulations:
Where possible, thermic fluids are formulated to be free of heavy metals, PCBs, and other restricted substances. Used fluid collection and responsible disposal or recycling guidance is offered as part of Davar ChemTech’s end-to-end service commitment.

Industrial Applications

Chemical Process Heating:
Thermic fluids are the backbone of indirect heating in batch and continuous chemical reactors, distillation columns, and reboilers. Precise temperature profiling enables consistent product quality, reduces side reactions, and improves yield in complex organic synthesis operations.

Pharmaceutical Manufacturing:
GMP-compliant pharmaceutical facilities rely on thermic fluids for reactor jacket heating, sterilisation tunnels, drying ovens, and lyophilisation (freeze-drying) cycles. Silicone-based and NSF H1-registered fluids are preferred where incidental food or drug contact is possible.

Food & Beverage Processing:
From commercial frying and cooking to spray drying of milk powder and deodorisation of edible oils, food-grade thermic fluids provide safe, reliable indirect heating. Their thermal stability prevents flavour contamination and meets stringent food safety regulations.

Textile Dyeing & Finishing:
High-temperature dye baths, stenter machines, and calendaring rolls require thermic fluids that can maintain 150–250 °C over extended production runs. Synthetic hydrocarbon grades offer the ideal balance of cost-effectiveness and thermal life in demanding textile environments.

Plastic & Rubber Processing:
Extruder barrel heating, blown film lines, injection moulding jacket circulation, and rubber vulcanisation presses all depend on accurate thermic fluid temperature control to achieve consistent melt quality and surface finish on finished products.

Oil & Gas & Asphalt:
Offshore platforms, pipeline heat tracing, gas sweetening unit heating, and asphalt storage tank heating demand fluids with proven low-temperature pumpability and high-temperature stability. Mineral oil and synthetic HC grades from Davar ChemTech’s portfolio are field-proven in these applications.

Storage, Handling & Safety

Thermic fluids should be stored in sealed, moisture-free containers — ideally indoors or under shelter — at ambient temperatures between 5 °C and 40 °C. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme cold should be avoided to prevent oxidative aging and viscosity increase respectively. All containers must carry GHS-compliant labels showing the flash point, hazard class, and relevant precautionary statements.

During handling, operators must wear chemical-resistant gloves (nitrile or neoprene), safety goggles, and protective clothing. Spills should be contained immediately using absorbent inert materials such as sand or vermiculite; contaminated absorbent must be disposed of in accordance with local hazardous waste regulations. Thermic fluids are generally classified as combustible liquids (Flash Point > 93 °C for most grades) and should be kept away from open flames and ignition sources. In the event of a fire, use dry chemical powder, CO₂, or foam extinguishers — water jets should not be used on thermic fluid fires due to the risk of spreading burning fluid.

Periodic fluid sampling and analysis (recommended every 6–12 months) is critical for monitoring degradation indicators such as acid number increase, viscosity change, and carbon residue formation. Davar ChemTech offers on-site fluid analysis services and provides detailed condition reports with actionable recommendations for fluid top-up, partial replacement, or full system flush.
