STPP – Sodium Tripolyphosphate
STPP is a widely used builder in detergent and cleaning formulations. It enhances cleaning efficiency by softening water, dispersing dirt, and preventing redeposition. With excellent buffering and emulsifying properties, STPP improves detergent performance, ensuring effective cleaning in household, industrial, and institutional applications while supporting formulation stability and consistency.
Description
STPP Supplier — Sodium Tripolyphosphate for Detergent, Water Treatment, Food Processing & Industrial Applications
Sodium Tripolyphosphate (STPP, Na5P3O10, CAS 7758-29-4) is the world’s most widely used phosphate builder and one of the highest-volume inorganic chemicals in the detergent, food processing, and water treatment industries. This white, crystalline, free-flowing powder is produced by thermal dehydration and condensation of phosphoric acid or by calcining a mixture of monosodium and disodium phosphate, yielding a product with exceptional water softening, sequestering, dispersing, and alkalinity-providing properties. STPP’s unique molecular structure — a linear triphosphate chain with five sodium ions — gives it the ability to chelate calcium and magnesium ions in hard water, preventing them from interfering with surfactant performance and enabling detergents to clean effectively at significantly lower surfactant concentrations.
Beyond detergent building, STPP serves as a moisture retainer and texture modifier in processed meats, seafood, and dairy products; a scale inhibitor and corrosion inhibitor in boiler water treatment; a dispersant in ceramic and pigment manufacturing; and a deflocculant in clay processing. While environmental regulations on phosphate discharge have restricted STPP use in laundry detergents in North America and Europe, it remains the dominant builder in Indian and Asian detergent formulations and is the global standard for food-grade phosphate applications. Davar ChemTech supplies both technical-grade and food-grade STPP from its Vadodara distribution hub with full analytical documentation, multiple packaging options, and application-specific technical advisory.

Industrial Applications
| Industry | Reason for Use |
| Detergent Builder | STPP softens hard water by chelating Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions, disperses soil particles, provides alkalinity for saponification, and prevents detergent powder caking — reduces surfactant consumption by 30-40% |
| Food Processing (E451) | Used as moisture retainer in processed meats (sausages, hams), seafood (shrimp, surimi), and dairy (processed cheese) — improves texture, yield, and shelf stability |
| Water Treatment | Functions as a scale inhibitor in boiler water systems and cooling towers by sequestering hardness ions; prevents calcium carbonate and calcium sulfate scale formation |
| Ceramics and Pigments | STPP acts as a deflocculant and dispersant in ceramic slip casting and pigment grinding, reducing water demand and improving suspension stability |
In detergent powder manufacturing, STPP delivers a combination of functions that no single alternative builder can fully replicate. Its primary function is water softening — STPP chelates calcium and magnesium ions through ionic complexation, effectively removing them from the wash liquor and preventing them from forming insoluble salts with anionic surfactants (LAS, SLS) that would otherwise reduce detergency and cause soap scum deposits on fabrics.
The sequestering power of STPP is typically measured in mg CaCO3 per gram of product, with technical-grade STPP delivering approximately 270-300 mg CaCO3/g. This high sequestering capacity allows detergent manufacturers to reduce surfactant dosage by 30-40% compared to phosphate-free formulations while maintaining equivalent cleaning performance — a significant cost advantage that is particularly important in India’s price-sensitive detergent market. The Phase I content of STPP is a critical quality parameter for detergent applications. STPP can crystallize in two distinct forms: Phase I (anhydrous, high-temperature form) and Phase II (hexahydrate, low-temperature form). Phase I dissolves rapidly in water and provides immediate builder action during the wash cycle, while Phase II dissolves more slowly and can cause grittiness or incomplete dissolution in short-wash-cycle machines.
The STPP supplied by Davar ChemTech maintains Phase I content ≥ 90%, ensuring rapid and complete dissolution even in cold-water wash conditions. In food processing, food-grade STPP (E451) serves primarily as a moisture-retaining agent and texture modifier. In processed meat products, STPP increases the water-holding capacity of meat proteins, improving product yield by 5-15%, enhancing juiciness and tenderness, and reducing shrinkage during cooking. In seafood processing, particularly for frozen shrimp, STPP treatment prevents moisture loss during freezing and thawing (drip loss), maintaining product weight and texture quality.

Storage, Handling & Safety
STPP is classified as a low-hazard chemical with minimal toxicity. It is not classified as corrosive, carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reproductive toxic under GHS regulations. The food-grade form (E451) is approved for direct human consumption by FDA, EFSA, and FSSAI at specified maximum levels. However, STPP solutions are mildly alkaline (pH 9-10 for 1% solution) and can cause mild skin and eye irritation with prolonged contact — wear gloves and safety goggles when handling powder and concentrated solutions. Avoid inhalation of dust during bag opening and transfer operations — use a dust mask or local exhaust ventilation.
STPP can hydrolyze in acidic conditions to form sodium orthophosphate, losing its sequestering power — store in dry conditions at ambient temperature and avoid contact with acids. Store in PP/PE bags or fibre drums with PE liner. HDPE and PP containers are suitable for solution storage. STPP is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture from humid air, leading to caking and partial hydrolysis — keep bags tightly sealed and store in a cool, dry warehouse. Environmental note: phosphate discharge into water bodies can contribute to eutrophication (algal blooms). Many jurisdictions regulate phosphate levels in wastewater effluent. STPP itself is non-toxic to aquatic life at typical discharge concentrations, but downstream phosphorus management should be considered. Spills should be swept or vacuumed carefully and collected for reuse or disposal per local regulations.
