Description

SLES Supplier — Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate for Shampoo, Body Wash, Liquid Detergent & Personal Care Formulations

Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES, CAS 68585-34-2) is the world’s most widely used anionic surfactant in personal care and liquid cleaning products, valued for its excellent foaming, viscosity-building, and mildness properties that make it the primary surfactant base in shampoos, body washes, facial cleansers, liquid hand soaps, and premium liquid detergents. SLES is produced by ethoxylating lauryl alcohol (typically derived from coconut or palm kernel oil) with 2-3 moles of ethylene oxide, followed by sulfation with sulfur trioxide or chlorosulfonic acid and neutralization with sodium hydroxide.

The resulting surfactant molecule combines the effective detergency and foaming of sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) with significantly improved mildness to skin and eyes, better solubility in hard water, and superior viscosity response when formulated with amphoteric and nonionic co-surfactants and electrolytes. SLES is commercially available in two primary grades: SLES 2 EO (2 moles of ethylene oxide) offering high foam and economy, and SLES 3 EO (3 moles) providing enhanced mildness, solubility, and viscosity control. For personal care formulators, detergent manufacturers, and institutional cleaning product compounders, SLES is the default first-choice surfactant that balances performance, cost, and consumer acceptance. Davar ChemTech supplies SLES 2 EO and SLES 3 EO in both standard and high-purity grades with full COA documentation.

Key Technical Features

  • SLES 2 EO (28-30% active) — high foam, excellent detergency, ideal for shampoos, body washes, and liquid detergents
  • SLES 3 EO (27-29% active) — enhanced mildness and viscosity, preferred for baby care, facial cleansers, and sensitive skin formulations
  • High-purity SLES with ≤ 1.5% unsulfated matter for premium personal care formulations requiring tight impurity control
  • Low dioxane content (≤ 30 ppm by GC) for products targeting regulatory-sensitive markets and safety-conscious consumers
  • Available in 200L HDPE drums and 1000L IBC totes — both paste and liquid forms
  • Full COA with active content, unsulfated matter, pH, dioxane, colour, and sodium sulfate parameters

Industrial Applications

Industry Reason for Use
Personal Care (Shampoo & Body Wash) SLES is the primary surfactant base providing rich foam, effective cleansing, and manageable viscosity when combined with CAPB and polymers
Liquid Detergents SLES enhances foam, grease removal, and product clarity in laundry liquids, dishwashing liquids, and hard-surface cleaners
Baby Care Products SLES 3 EO with low dioxane and high purity is used in baby shampoos, baby washes, and children’s bath products requiring extra mildness
Toothpaste & Oral Care SLES serves as a foaming agent in toothpaste formulations, providing creamy foam that aids in even distribution of fluoride and active ingredients

In shampoo formulation, SLES serves as the primary surfactant — typically used at 10-20% active concentration — providing the rich, creamy lather that consumers associate with effective cleaning. The choice between SLES 2 EO and SLES 3 EO depends on the target market positioning: SLES 2 EO delivers maximum foam volume and economy for mass-market shampoos, while SLES 3 EO provides the enhanced mildness and controlled viscosity preferred by premium and dermatologist-recommended brands. The viscosity of SLES-based shampoo formulations is controlled through the addition of salt (NaCl), which interacts with the surfactant micelles to produce a dramatic thickening effect at concentrations of 1-3% w/w. This salt-thickening response is one of the reasons SLES is so widely preferred over SLS in consumer products — it enables formulators to achieve desired product rheology without expensive polymeric thickeners.

In liquid detergent applications, SLES complements LABSA-derived LAS by providing superior foam in hard water conditions, better cold-water solubility, and improved grease emulsification. The combination of LAS and SLES in liquid laundry detergents creates a synergistic cleaning system where LAS provides primary detergency at low cost while SLES enhances foam, product stability, and low-temperature performance. The 1,4-dioxane impurity in SLES has become a significant regulatory and consumer perception issue in recent years. 1,4-Dioxane is a byproduct formed during the ethoxylation step of SLES manufacture and is classified as a Category 2B carcinogen by IARC. While typical SLES contains dioxane levels well below health-based guidance values, the EU Cosmetics Regulation limits 1,4-dioxane to trace amounts, and many brands now specify maximum dioxane levels of 10-30 ppm in their SLES specifications. Davar ChemTech supplies SLES with dioxane content ≤ 30 ppm as standard, with lower-dioxane grades available on request for export-oriented and premium personal care formulations.

Storage, Handling & Safety

SLES is classified as a mild irritant (Skin Irritation Category 2, Eye Irritation Category 2 under GHS). While significantly milder than SLS, SLES can still cause eye irritation at concentrations above 5% — this is why tear-free baby products often use amphoteric surfactants (CAPB, coco-glucoside) as the primary surfactant with SLES at reduced levels. Wear nitrile gloves and safety goggles when handling concentrated SLES. SLES is not classified as flammable, but the aqueous solution will support combustion if involved in a fire.

Store in HDPE containers at ambient temperature away from strong oxidizers and strong acids. SLES can hydrolyze in strongly acidic conditions (pH < 4), reverting to the non-sulfated alcohol — maintain formulation pH above 5.5 for product stability. At elevated temperatures (> 50 °C), SLES solutions can gradually lose viscosity and active content — store below 40 °C and avoid prolonged heating during processing. Spills should be contained with inert absorbent and flushed with plenty of water. SLES is readily biodegradable and is not classified as a marine pollutant.
