AR/GR Grade Acids and Bases

AR/GR Grade Acids and Bases are high-purity chemicals designed for analytical and research applications requiring precise results. They offer minimal impurities and consistent composition, ensuring accuracy in titrations, testing, and laboratory processes. Widely used in laboratories, they support reliable and reproducible analytical performance.

Description

AR/GR Grade Acids and Bases Supplier — High-Purity Mineral Acids, Organic Acids and Alkalis for Analytical Laboratories

High-purity acids and bases represent the most critical — and potentially the most hazardous — category of laboratory reagents. These are the workhorse chemicals that underpin virtually every quantitative analytical method: acid-base titrations, sample digestions, pH adjustments, extractions, and wet chemical preparations. The distinction between AR (Analytical Reagent) and GR (Guaranteed Reagent) grade acids and bases lies primarily in the stringency of impurity specifications — GR grade, as defined by Merck and equivalent manufacturers, typically specifies lower impurity limits for trace metals, halides, and other contaminants that could interfere with sensitive analytical measurements. For laboratories performing trace metal analysis by AAS or ICP-MS, even trace impurities in the digestion acid can produce false-positive results — making acid purity a determining factor in the laboratory’s detection capability. Davar ChemTech supplies a comprehensive range of AR/GR grade mineral acids (hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, hydrofluoric, perchloric, phosphoric), organic acids (acetic, formic, oxalic, citric), and bases (sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonia solution, tetramethylammonium hydroxide) with full impurity profiling and Certificate of Analysis.

Key Technical Features

  • Ultra-pure nitric acid (65% and 69%) available in trace-metal-grade and semiconductor-grade purity levels
  • Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide in pellet and solution form with certified carbonate-free purity
  • Ammonia solution (25% and 28%) in low-carbonate grade for analytical work requiring precise alkalinity
  • Full impurity profile on COA including heavy metals (Pb, As, Cd, Hg), chloride, sulphate, iron, and residue-on-ignition

Industrial Applications

Industry Reason for Use
Analytical Chemistry Labs Core reagents for acid-base titrations, sample digestion (aqua regia, mixed acid), pH adjustments, and wet chemical preparations in quantitative analysis
Pharmaceutical QC Compendial acids and bases for pharmacopoeial assay methods, impurity testing, and dissolution media preparation as per IP/BP/USP monograph requirements
Metallurgical Testing High-purity acids for metal sample dissolution, alloy composition analysis, and trace element determination in steel, aluminium, and non-ferrous metallurgy
Academic Research GR grade acids and bases for synthesis, materials science research, electrochemical studies, and graduate-level analytical chemistry experiments

In trace metal analysis by AAS or ICP-MS, the purity of the digestion acid is often the limiting factor in the laboratory’s method detection limit (MDL). If the nitric acid used for sample digestion contains 2 ppb of lead, for example, the analyst cannot reliably report lead concentrations below approximately 6–10 ppb (3× blank standard deviation). This is why trace-metal-grade acids — purified by sub-boiling distillation in quartz or PTFE apparatus — are mandatory for ultra-trace analysis laboratories, environmental monitoring stations, and semiconductor-grade purity testing. In pharmaceutical quality control, acids and bases are consumed in enormous volumes across multiple test procedures: acid-base titrations for active ingredient assay, acid digestion for heavy metal limit tests, pH adjustment of dissolution media, and preparation of mobile phase modifiers for HPLC analysis. The pharmacopoeial monograph typically specifies the grade of acid or base required — USP methods may call for ‘Nitric Acid, ACS Reagent Grade’ or ‘Hydrochloric Acid, NF grade’ — and using a lower grade constitutes a method deviation that requires validation. For metallurgical testing, the ability to dissolve representative metal samples completely without introducing interfering impurities is essential. Aqua regia (3:1 HCl:HNO3) digestion of alloy samples, hydrofluoric acid dissolution of silicate minerals, and perchloric acid digestion of organic matrices all demand acids of known and certified purity.

Storage, Handling & Safety

AR/GR grade acids and bases are among the most hazardous materials routinely handled in laboratories and require the highest level of safety awareness and engineering controls. Concentrated mineral acids (HCl, HNO3, H2SO4) cause severe chemical burns on skin contact and eye damage — always wear acid-resistant gloves (neoprene or nitrile), chemical splash goggles, face shield, acid-resistant apron, and work inside a functioning fume hood with adequate face velocity. Always add acid to water slowly with stirring — NEVER add water to acid, as the exothermic reaction can cause violent boiling and splattering of concentrated acid. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) requires special mention — it is uniquely dangerous because it penetrates skin and decalcifies bone, causing deep tissue damage that may not be immediately painful. HF-exposed personnel must have calcium gluconate gel immediately available and seek emergency medical treatment. Strong bases (NaOH, KOH) are equally corrosive and can cause severe burns, particularly to the eyes. Store acids and bases in separate, clearly labeled areas. Never store acids in metal containers (except for hydrofluoric acid in plastic). Ensure emergency eyewash stations and safety showers are accessible within 10 seconds of travel from the handling area.
