Aluminium Sulphate (Alum)
Alum is a widely used coagulant in water purification and wastewater treatment processes. It aids in removing suspended particles and impurities through flocculation. Known for its cost-effectiveness and reliability, alum supports efficient clarification and improved water quality in municipal and industrial treatment applications.
Description
Aluminium Sulphate (Alum) Supplier — Industrial Grade Coagulant for Water Treatment & Paper Manufacturing
Aluminium Sulphate, universally known as Alum, remains one of the most widely deployed coagulants in the global water treatment industry with over a century of proven performance history. This inorganic salt, produced by reacting sulphuric acid with bauxite or aluminium trihydrate, dissociates in water to release aluminium ions that hydrolyze and form insoluble aluminium hydroxide flocs — these flocs entrain suspended particles, colloidal matter, and organic impurities, carrying them to the bottom of clarification tanks through gravity settling. For water treatment plant operators, municipal engineers, and industrial procurement teams, alum offers the advantage of being a well-understood, cost-effective coagulant with predictable performance characteristics and established dosing protocols. Davar ChemTech supplies both non-ferric alum (aluminium sulphate) and ferric alum grades in lump, powder, and kibble forms, with each batch tested for Al2O3 content, iron content, insoluble matter, and heavy metal limits.
Key Technical Features
- Non-ferric alum with Al2O3 content of 17% minimum for consistent coagulation performance in standard water treatment
- Ferric alum variant containing 0.5–1.0% Fe2O3 for enhanced coagulation of colored and organic-loaded surface waters
- Available in lump, kibble, and powder forms to match different dissolution and dosing system requirements
- Low cost per kilogram of active Al2O3 compared to PAC, making it economical for large-volume applications
- Compatible with polyelectrolyte flocculants and chlorine-based disinfection systems in conventional treatment trains
- Full traceability from bauxite source through manufacturing to final product with Certificate of Analysis
Industrial Applications
| Industry | Reason for Use |
| Drinking Water Treatment | Primary coagulant for turbidity and color removal in conventional water treatment plants using rapid mix, flocculation, and sedimentation |
| Paper Manufacturing | Used as a sizing agent, rosin-alum fixing agent, and retention aid in papermaking to improve paper strength and printability |
| Wastewater Treatment | Precipitates phosphates and removes suspended solids in municipal sewage and industrial effluent treatment |
| Tanning Industry | Employed as a tanning agent in leather processing to stabilize collagen fibers and produce firm, durable leather |
In conventional drinking water treatment, alum has been the backbone coagulant for over 100 years, and it continues to serve reliably in thousands of water treatment plants worldwide. The coagulation mechanism involves the formation of Al(OH)3 flocs through hydrolysis of Al3+ ions — these amorphous flocs have high specific surface area and positive surface charge at optimal pH (6.0–7.5), enabling efficient sweep flocculation of negatively charged colloidal particles, clay, and organic matter. While PAC has gained market share in recent years, alum remains the preferred choice for many municipal utilities due to its lower chemical cost, established dosing protocols, and the availability of skilled operators familiar with its behavior. The paper industry consumes large volumes of alum as part of the rosin sizing system — alum fixes anionic rosin soap onto the cationic fibre surface, creating a hydrophobic paper that resists ink penetration and improves writing quality. In wastewater treatment, alum is highly effective at precipitating soluble phosphate to insoluble aluminium phosphate, achieving phosphate removal efficiencies exceeding 90% at optimally adjusted pH. In leather tanning, alum tanning (also known as pickling with alum) is one of the oldest tanning methods, producing white, soft leather particularly suited for gloves, bookbinding, and garment leather.

Storage, Handling & Safety
Alum is acidic in solution and can cause irritation to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. When dissolving solid alum, the exothermic reaction releases heat and may generate alum dust — wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and a dust mask. Use in well-ventilated areas. Alum solutions have pH values of 2.5–4.0 depending on concentration — they will corrode mild steel and aluminium; use corrosion-resistant dosing equipment (HDPE, PVC, FRP, or rubber-lined steel). Store in dry, cool conditions away from alkalis and cement. Spills of solid alum can be swept up carefully; liquid spills should be contained and neutralized with lime before disposal.
Supply Capability & Distribution Strength
Davar ChemTech leverages its Vadodara location to supply alum across western, central, and northern India from warehoused stock positions maintained at strategic logistics points. Our supply chain connects directly to municipal water treatment plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, as well as paper mills in Gujarat’s Vapi-Valsad corridor and Maharashtra’s Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation zones. We offer both non-ferric and ferric alum grades in 50 kg bags and bulk (Jumbo bag and tanker) formats. Standard lead times range from 2–5 working days for Gujarat and Maharashtra, and 5–8 working days for other regions. Every shipment includes a detailed Certificate of Analysis with Al2O3 content, iron, insoluble matter, and heavy metal (arsenic, lead, cadmium) test results.
