Description
Magnesium Bromide Supplier — Oilfield-Grade MgBr2 for Heavy Completion Brines & Industrial Applications
Magnesium Bromide (MgBr2, CAS 7789-48-2) is a high-density inorganic bromide salt that plays a specialized but critically important role in the oil and gas industry as a key component of heavy completion and workover brines. This white, highly hygroscopic, crystalline compound is extremely soluble in water, forming solutions with densities that significantly exceed those of sodium chloride and sodium bromide brines — making it indispensable for high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) well completions where maximum hydrostatic pressure must be maintained without introducing solids into the formation.
Magnesium bromide is typically used in combination with calcium bromide (CaBr2) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) to achieve brine densities in the 14.2 to 19.2 pounds per gallon (ppg) range, covering the most demanding completion scenarios encountered in deep wells, horizontal completions, and HPHT reservoirs. Beyond its oilfield applications, magnesium bromide finds use as a precursor in organomagnesium synthesis, as a catalyst support in certain polymerization reactions, and as a component in specialized fire-retardant formulations. For oilfield procurement teams and drilling fluid engineers, sourcing high-purity magnesium bromide with tight specifications for calcium, iron, and sulfate content is essential to maintaining brine clarity, minimizing corrosion, and ensuring wellbore integrity. Davar ChemTech supplies oilfield-grade and industrial-grade magnesium bromide with full analytical documentation and technical advisory support for brine formulation.

Industrial Applications
| Industry | Reason for Use |
| Oilfield Heavy Brines | MgBr2 combined with CaBr2 and CaCl2 produces clear brine systems achieving 14.2-19.2 ppg — essential for HPHT well completions where maximum hydrostatic pressure is required |
| Well Workover and Stimulation | Magnesium bromide brines serve as clean, solids-free kill fluids during workover operations to control formation pressure without damaging the wellbore |
| Chemical Synthesis | MgBr2 serves as a precursor for Grignard reagent synthesis (after conversion to Mg metal) and as a Lewis acid catalyst in organic synthesis reactions |
| Fire Retardants | Magnesium bromide solutions are used as components in flame-retardant formulations for textiles and wood treatment due to bromine’s flame-inhibiting properties |
In the oil and gas industry, the demand for heavy completion brines has increased significantly with the global shift toward deeper, higher-pressure reservoirs and the growing prevalence of horizontal and multi-stage fractured wells. Conventional drilling muds and sodium chloride brines are insufficient for these applications — they cannot achieve the high densities required to control formation pressures, and their solid content can cause formation damage that permanently reduces well productivity. Magnesium bromide, when blended with calcium bromide and calcium chloride in carefully engineered proportions, produces ternary brine systems that achieve densities up to 19.2 ppg (2.30 g/cm3) while remaining completely solids-free and clear.
This is accomplished by exploiting the eutectic properties of the MgBr2-CaBr2-CaCl2-H2O system — the mixed salt solution remains stable and free of crystallization at temperatures down to approximately 0 °C at maximum density, which is critical for operations in deepwater environments and cold-climate regions. The oilfield-grade magnesium bromide supplied by Davar ChemTech is specified with strict limits on calcium content (≤ 100 ppm as Ca), iron content (≤ 50 ppm as Fe), and sulfate content (≤ 50 ppm as SO4), because these impurities can cause formation plugging, scale deposition, or accelerated corrosion of downhole tubular goods during extended exposure periods. In deepwater wells in India’s eastern offshore (KG-D6, Mahanadi basin), completion brines may remain in contact with the formation for weeks or months — making brine purity and stability paramount to well productivity and long-term reservoir performance.

Storage, Handling & Safety
Magnesium bromide is classified as a moderate hazard chemical — it is harmful if swallowed and irritating to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. The aqueous solution is mildly acidic (pH typically 5.0-6.5) and can cause skin and eye irritation with prolonged contact. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing when handling solid magnesium bromide or concentrated solutions. Avoid generating dust when handling the solid — use local exhaust ventilation or a dust mask. Magnesium bromide is extremely hygroscopic and will rapidly absorb moisture from the air, forming concentrated solutions that can damage metal surfaces through localized corrosion. Store solid MgBr2 in tightly sealed, moisture-proof containers in a cool, dry location. Store solution in HDPE or FRP (fibreglass reinforced plastic) containers — do not use mild steel or aluminium containers for long-term storage as the bromide ions will cause pitting corrosion. For oilfield brine mixing operations, follow standard PPE requirements for handling concentrated brine solutions, including chemical splash protection for eyes and face. In case of skin contact with solid or concentrated solution, wash thoroughly with plenty of water. For eye contact, flush with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention. Magnesium bromide is not classified as a marine pollutant, but large releases into waterways should be contained and reported. Spills should be collected, diluted, and neutralized per local waste disposal regulations.
