Glycols
Glycols are versatile chemicals widely used as solvents, antifreeze agents, and intermediates in resins and polyester production. They offer excellent hygroscopic properties and thermal stability. With consistent quality, glycols support efficient heat transfer, moisture control, and reliable performance across industrial, automotive, and chemical processing applications.
Description
Industrial Glycols Supplier — Ethylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, DEG & TEG for Coolant, Pharma & Polyester
Glycols represent a critically important family of dihydric alcohols that serve as foundational raw materials across an extraordinarily diverse range of industries — from automotive antifreeze formulations and HVAC chilled water systems to pharmaceutical excipients, food-grade humectants, polyester fibre production, and natural gas dehydration. The four most commercially significant glycols — Monoethylene Glycol (MEG), Diethylene Glycol (DEG), Triethylene Glycol (TEG), and Propylene Glycol (PG) — share a common chemical backbone of hydroxyl-terminated ether chains but differ markedly in their physical properties, toxicity profiles, and application suitability. For procurement teams managing coolant formulation programs, polyester manufacturing operations, or pharmaceutical ingredient supply chains, understanding these differences is essential to selecting the correct glycol grade. Davar ChemTech supplies all four major glycols in industrial and pharmaceutical grades, with each product accompanied by full analytical documentation including purity, water content, acidity, color (Pt-Co), and heavy metal analysis to ensure compliance with the relevant pharmacopoeial or industrial specifications.
Key Technical Features
- MEG with ≥ 99.5% purity and ≤ 0.1% water content for polyester-grade and automotive coolant applications
- Propylene Glycol USP/EP grade meeting pharmacopoeial and food additive (E1520) requirements for pharma and food use
- DEG with controlled acidity and UV stability for unsaturated polyester resin and polyurethane foam applications
- TEG with high hygroscopicity for natural gas dehydration and desiccant air drying systems
- Low-temperature fluidity — all glycols remain pumpable at sub-zero temperatures critical for winter operations
- Available in bulk tankers, IBC totes, and 200L drums for flexible order quantities and safe handling
Industrial Applications
| Industry | Reason for Use |
| HVAC and Coolant Systems | Used as antifreeze and heat transfer fluid — MEG lowers freezing point in engine coolants; PG preferred for food-grade and non-toxic applications |
| Pharmaceuticals | Propylene Glycol serves as solvent, humectant, and excipient in oral syrups, injectables, and topical formulations (USP/EP grade compliance mandatory) |
| Personal Care and Cosmetics | PG functions as humectant, solvent, and viscosity modifier in creams, lotions, shampoos, and deodorants due to its excellent skin compatibility |
| Polyester and Resin Manufacturing | MEG is the primary diol monomer for PET fibre and bottle resin production; DEG modifies flexibility and processing characteristics of unsaturated polyester resins |
In automotive and industrial coolant systems, glycols function by depressing the freezing point and elevating the boiling point of water when blended in the 30–60% concentration range. Monoethylene glycol is the traditional antifreeze base, offering excellent heat transfer efficiency and corrosion inhibition when formulated with appropriate inhibitor packages. However, its toxicity has driven increasing adoption of propylene glycol in food-processing coolant loops, solar thermal systems, and marine applications where accidental leakage into waterways or food contact must be avoided. The polyester industry is the single largest consumer of MEG globally — it is esterified with terephthalic acid to produce PET (polyethylene terephthalate), the polymer used in polyester fibres, PET bottles, and packaging films. The quality of MEG directly impacts the intrinsic viscosity, colour, and acetaldehyde content of the resulting PET — which is why polyester-grade MEG requires purity levels of 99.5% or higher with stringent UV transmittance specifications. In natural gas processing, TEG is used in absorption dehydration columns to remove water vapour from natural gas streams, preventing hydrate formation and pipeline corrosion. TEG’s lower vapour pressure compared to MEG and DEG makes it the preferred glycol for gas dehydration, as it minimizes glycol losses through vaporization and carryover.

Storage, Handling & Safety
Ethylene glycol is highly toxic if ingested — it metabolizes to oxalic acid causing kidney failure and can be fatal at doses as low as 100 mL. Keep all MEG containers tightly sealed and clearly labeled with toxicity warnings. Propylene glycol is considerably less toxic (classified as generally recognized as safe by FDA for food use) but should still be handled with standard chemical precautions. All glycols are combustible liquids — store away from open flames, ignition sources, and strong oxidizers. Use chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles when handling. In case of skin contact, wash with soap and water. For eye contact, flush with water for at least 15 minutes. Use appropriate grounding and bonding during tanker transfers to prevent static discharge. Spills should be contained, absorbed with inert material, and disposed of per local hazardous waste regulations.
