Polyaluminium Chloride (PAC)
PAC is an effective coagulant widely used in water and wastewater treatment. It ensures rapid floc formation, improved turbidity removal, and reduced sludge generation. With high efficiency over a wide pH range, PAC enhances treatment performance and operational reliability in municipal and industrial water treatment systems.
Description
Polyaluminium Chloride (PAC) Supplier — High-Efficiency Coagulant for Water & Wastewater Treatment
Polyaluminium Chloride (PAC) has emerged as the preferred coagulant in modern water treatment, steadily replacing conventional alum in both municipal and industrial applications due to its superior charge neutralization efficiency, wider effective pH range, and significantly lower sludge generation. As a pre-polymerized aluminium-based coagulant, PAC delivers faster floc formation, better settling characteristics, and reduced alkalinity consumption compared to aluminium sulphate — advantages that translate directly into smaller treatment plant footprints, lower chemical dosing costs, and reduced dewatering requirements for the generated sludge. For water treatment plant operators, municipal corporations, and EPC contractors designing STP and ETP systems, selecting the right PAC grade is a performance-critical decision. Davar ChemTech supplies both liquid PAC (30–32% Al2O3) and spray-dried PAC powder with full Certificate of Analysis, batch traceability, and technical dosing guidance to ensure optimal coagulation performance across diverse water quality conditions.
Key Technical Features
- High basicity PAC (60–70%) ensuring effective coagulation across a broad pH range of 5.0–9.0 without pH adjustment
- Low residual aluminium content (< 0.1 mg/L in treated water) meeting WHO drinking water guidelines
- Rapid floc formation and superior settleability reducing clarification tank retention time by 30–40%
- Spray-dried powder form with excellent solubility enabling fast preparation of dosing solutions
- Liquid grade available in 30–32% Al2O3 concentration for direct dosing via metering pumps
- Lower sludge volume generation compared to alum, reducing dewatering and disposal costs by up to 50%
Industrial Applications
| Industry | Reason for Use |
| Municipal Water Treatment | Primary coagulant for turbidity removal, color reduction, and organic matter elimination in drinking water plants |
| Paper & Pulp Industry | Used as a sizing agent retention aid and effluent coagulant in paper mill wastewater treatment loops |
| Textile Processing | Effective coagulant for removing suspended dyes, sizing agents, and COD from dye-house effluents |
| Industrial Effluent Treatment | Coagulates heavy metals, phosphates, suspended solids, and colloidal matter in ETP primary treatment |
In municipal water treatment, PAC has become the coagulant of choice for plants treating surface water with variable turbidity and organic loading. Unlike alum, which requires careful pH control (typically 6.0–7.0) to achieve optimal floc formation, PAC performs effectively across a much wider pH band, reducing the need for costly acid or alkali dosing systems. This operational flexibility is particularly valuable during monsoon periods when raw water quality fluctuates dramatically — PAC maintains consistent treated water turbidity below 1 NTU even under shock loading conditions. The paper and pulp industry consumes significant PAC volumes in two distinct applications: as a process chemical for improving pitch and fines retention during papermaking, and as a coagulant in the mill’s effluent treatment plant for COD, BOD, and color removal. In textile effluent treatment, PAC’s strong cationic charge efficiently neutralizes negatively charged dye molecules and colloidal sizing agents, producing dense, easily dewatered flocs. For industrial ETPs handling complex mixed effluents from chemical, pharmaceutical, and food processing units, PAC’s broad-spectrum coagulation performance makes it an ideal primary treatment chemical.

Storage, Handling & Safety
PAC is an acidic chemical that requires standard chemical handling precautions. Liquid PAC (pH 3.5–5.0) can cause skin and eye irritation — wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and face shield when handling. Use rubber apron and boots when transferring liquid from carboys or tankers. Powder PAC generates dust during handling — wear NIOSH-approved dust respirator and ensure adequate ventilation. Store in HDPE or FRP containers only; do not use mild steel or aluminium vessels as corrosion will occur. In case of skin contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Spills should be neutralized with lime or sodium bicarbonate before cleanup.
